It is very important to create a game plan for your business right from the beginning for two reasons. First, your plan acts as your road map for success and guides you on where to go. Second, you will start your business with great habits instead of excuses.

If you don’t have a plan put in place you won’t set time aside to build your business, you won’t remember important trainings and functions, and you won’t put forth the efforts needed in order to make your home business a success.

Although it might sound intimidating, creating a game plan really isn’t all that hard. All you need to do is map out a few key things.

#1 – How much time can you commit to your business each week? Write down the scheduled times and what you are going to get accomplished.
#2 - What tools to you need to arm yourself with to be successful? Write down books, meetings, products, or conversations you need to have and with whom.
#3 – What are your realistic goals for the next 12 months? Get with a mentor and map out where you would like to be and the steps you will have to take to achieve those goals.

See, it’s really not that hard and seriously makes all the difference in your success or failure. I never understood why something that would take only a couple of hours to do is avoided like the plague when people to start a home business. It only makes sense to have a plan in place to help you succeed.

As much as is possible, you should always test your advertising. If you jump in and start dumping tons of money in to advertising without first testing your advertising, you might find yourself broke and without sales at the end of the road. Most people who commit this error write off their failure on the home business they chose or the economy or any of a hundred other excuses. But, if they are unwilling to take responsibility for their mistake, they will never learn from their mistake. Don’t let this be you.

LESSON #2

All testing should be done in blocks. If you begin to advertise simultaneously in newspapers, radio and television, how will you know which advertising is bringing people to your cash register? You won’t. All you will know that something might be working, but you will not know what is actually doing the trick.

Even if you tell people in your advertising to tell you how they found you, my experience shows that fewer than 10% of the people ever will tell you anything — and those people who do may not even get the facts straight! You cannot rely on your customers to tell you what advertising is working for your home business. You must put in the extra effort to know for yourself.

LESSON #3

Only when you have a proven and solid advertising portfolio should you venture to drop big bucks in an advertising campaign. Even then, you should be careful to keep further measurements to determine how much the maximum advantage of an ad would be. Sometimes you might be able to reach ten times as many people, but depending on the kind of media and other factors, the additional exposure will only generate twice as many sales. Keep your eye attuned to situations like this to get the most from your advertising dollars.

LESSON #4

As Lesson #3 illustrates, sometimes your best advertising investment may actually cost you less money. When you are first starting out, whether you are running a home business or a business outside of your home, you need to be able to get people talking and thinking about your business.

If you are busy testing ads in media’s such as the newspaper, magazines, radio, and television, you need to learn ways of promoting your business that do not require large cash expenditures. A few examples are:

• Word of Mouth
• Business Cards
• Press Releases
• Non-Primetime Ads on Radio and Television

This of course is the cheapest kind of advertising on the planet — it does not cost you anything. Ask your customers if they know anyone who could also use your products or services. You can usually pick up 500 business cards for about $20. When you do, hand them out. Do not give more than a couple of cards to each person. If they need more cards from you, they will ask.

With these people, you can suggest to them that if they write their name on the back of one of your business cards and the card is presented to you, then you will pay a referral fee to them. Press Releases are a good source for generating news about your home business. The business editor at your local newspaper is always on the lookout for a good business story to fill the business news section of the newspaper.

Of course, the business editor understands the economics of running a paper and is more inclined to run your story if you buy advertising in his/her publication, but will still print stories for special events and openings.

The important thing to remember about Press Releases is that it must be constructed in the form of a news story. Even if you are a sole proprietorship, quotes from you should be written in a third person format: John Doe said, “Your quote here.”

A Press Release should pack the most important information at the beginning of the copy, and leave extra details towards the end.

You should always provide the reporter who gets the task a simple and easy way for him/her to contact you directly. Often the reporter will want to contact you to get details that will enhance their take on your story.

Non-Primetime Ads on Radio and Television

Believe it or not, some of the best rates for radio and television are on the overnight and non-primetime venues. These target times are not a total waste as they can easily keep the infomercial people in business.

These off-hours are just less populated than the primetime hours.

Don’t be afraid to check your local radio and television rates for non-primetime hours to see what bargains may exist. With television, primetime is 7pm to 10pm. With radio, primetime is 8am to 5pm. This sure leaves a whole lot of hours available to advertise your home business at discount rates!

1. Success doesn’t happen overnight.

For some reason people think that they should become rich in a few months with their new home business and some people believe success should happen within weeks or days! Consider setting business hours. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but asking friends and family members to respect your business and your business hours is an important step to success. We’ve got a good friend who makes more than $100,000 a year and when you come over to his house during business hours you can visit with his wife, but he excuses himself and works his business. If you have a small child, work when he or she is napping and when they are in bed at night.

It’s also a good idea to have a permanent work space, so you can shut the door, eliminate distractions and get your work done.

This is a difficult adjustment for some people to make, but your children can learn that when Mommy or Daddy is in this room with the door shut that they are working. You’d be amazed at how many children will respect your space and time if you ask them too. We’ve seen many successful stay at home moms and dads work with children nearby. Don’t let screaming children or children that interrupt you on occasion become a big deal, the person on the other end of the phone may be convinced that your business is right for them BECAUSE they hear your children in the background.

When you promise to call somebody back at a certain time you’ve got to find the time. Children will appreciate knowing why Mommy or Daddy isn’t available at certain times and you can explain to them that it will be worth all the sacrifices once you become successful.

Discipline can be difficult with all the distractions that can occur in your home, but it is one ingredient that you must have to become successful.

4. Who you’re involved with is more important than the business you’re in.

Let’s face it, most people don’t really have a clue how to operate a business, any kind of business not just a home business. When we’re young we are told to go to school to get good grades so we can get a good… JOB! 5. Technology has changed everything.

Many years ago you had to get out and meet people and most business was done face to face. You could call people around the country, but if they had any interest in your business you had to send a package overnight. That proved to be very expensive.

When we were broke, I thought everybody that sounded serious, was serious. I was sending out packages several times a week only to find that these people weren’t serious at all.

Then, the internet changed everything. You don’t have to meet people face to face anymore, although I must admit it’s still my favorite way of doing business. Today, you can upload a video in seconds, so people can see you. You can send an email with links to websites, videos and your contact information. Auto responders make you look like a Fortune 500 company, and nobody knows how big your business really is because anybody anywhere can have a great looking website.

When I started my business more than 10 years ago my long distance phone bill was nearly $1,000 a month, today we can call as much as we want for $20! You can use conference calling and web casts to present your business to hundreds of people at a time.

People can automatically receive your latest Pod cast and watch it in the subway or at lunch. This is the information age and you should capitalize on the shift in technology in your home business. Don’t worry about all the latest gadgets when you start your business because the personal touch will always be important. Even if you don’t have a lot of money technology allows your home business to operate and look like a very big business.

Don’t get too preoccupied with technology. You can, however, use it to enhance your image and your productivity if you know what you are doing. We were so broke and so desperate for a breakthrough in our lives that we realized that we could not afford the luxury of having negative thoughts. There were plenty of other negative people that we could have listened to, but what was that going to get us?

What if we listened to the people that were positive, which by the way were the same people who were achieving success? When we started our home business we felt like the biggest loser on the planet. If something positive didn’t happen soon we were going to have to move out of state to live with Judith’s mother. How were we going to explain to our children that we had lost our home? If our home business was going to change, we would have to change first.

We couldn’t afford the luxury of one negative thought. We started making good choices. We would distance ourselves from anybody that had anything negative to say about anything! We would surround ourselves with positive, uplifting people who would speak life into our lives.

We didn’t listen to people who laughed at us and yes, there really were people who laughed at us. We believed that we would have life changing success even before there were any real signs of success. Some people call that the “fake it till you make it” concept. While we wholeheartedly endorse that concept we do not recommend that you mislead people.

There is nothing wrong with having a positive attitude. It is wrong to misrepresent your current financial situation. One of the most disappointing things we encounter in home business is the tendency that people have to inflate their incomes. There must be some school of thought that this is appealing or O.K. and it is not.

Once you lose your integrity, you can never get it back. We have done everything we can to make it clear that a home business will not typically solve your financial pressures overnight. Well, I didn’t write this article to brag about my own success. I want to share 10 very valuable lessons I’ve learned in the process of creating my home business.

10. Start your home business while still employed
It would be a very bad idea to put everything on the line. Never quit your day-time job until you are entirely sure you want to concentrate everything on your project. Of course it’s not easy to start a project while still being employed. Chances are, that you have a thousand other things on your mind. But if you really want it, everyone can pull it off. It’s actually not that hard to free up 2 hours a day for your project. It’s a matter of getting the priorities straight.

9. Don’t try and be an expert at everything
This is a common mistake a lot of people make, including myself. I wanted to know everything, be able to do everything and do everything myself. Face it.. you can’t be an expert at everything. It’s hardly ever a good idea to start your project all by yourself. It’s good to be able to do most of it yourself, but for some things you’ll be better off outsourcing it or get someone to help you out. This can cost you a bit money, but it gives you the ability to focus on the more important projects. Carefully think about your strengths and weaknesses, this will give you a strong idea on what you need.

8. Think long term
A lot of people start in an spontaneous mood. This isn’t a bad thing, seeing as how these ideas commonly work out pretty well. Just remember that it’s always good to think long-term. There are enough ways to make some quick profit.. unfortunately it barely ever lasts. Make sure you have an idea on how to keep the business running. How do you keep customers, where does the profit come from, what do you do if x happens? If you can answer such questions you’re good to go!

7. Get your marketing skills up-to-par
Well, this might be a contradiction because I’ve just said you don’t need to be an expert at everything. Marketing skills however, are essential for having succes. If you don’t have a background in (internet) marketing, I recommend you to read some blogs or books. This will benefit you with your home business!

6. Device a plan of attack for the home business
Don’t start just yet! It’s good to have a bit of a plan of attack. Don’t write a huge business plan or try and cover everything you can possibly think off.. it usually doesn’t work out the way you thought it would. But you should at least have a strong idea of what you’re going to do and keep doing. Create goals, set priorities, write down some essential steps and have a broad draft of what you’re home business is going to look like.

5. Don’t look back
It doesn’t matter how amazing you are: you will make slips. I don’t think there’s anyone that started a home business without setbacks. Of course it’s not easy to deal with setbacks and failure.. but please, continue with what you’re doing and learn from your mistakes. Too many people get frustrated, insecure or unmotivated when things aren’t going according to plan. This is a shame because making mistakes will benefit your home business in the end.

4. Market research
There’s probably a few people cringing right now. If you don’t know who your competitors are and what the odds of your home business are like, you are very vulnerable. Before you head into any (niche) market it is important to know what the strong and weak points of your competition are. You might also come across things you didn’t know about, which can be used for your home business.

3. Focus
Focus is very important if you’re creating a home business. All too often people will find themselves doing twenty tasks at once. The result: neither task gets completed or the quality is lacking. If you’re working on your home business, make a to-do list and prioritize. Always finish something before you move forward. This might be/seem difficult at first, but you’ll be a lot more productive later on!

2. Do what you love
Doing something that you love is the biggest motivation you’ll ever have. Make sure that you do something you enjoy when you’re starting your home business. If you’re starting a home business in something you’re not really fanatic about.. you’ll soon notice that it’s harder to stay motivated, especially when things are a bit rough.
